Alibaug sits across the harbour from Mumbai, and you can reach it by sea or by road. Which is best depends on where you're starting, whether you want to bring your car, and the time of day. Here are the main routes, with rough journey times. (Times vary with traffic, weather and ferry schedules — treat them as guides, not guarantees.)

By ferry from Mumbai (usually the fastest)

For most people travelling from South Mumbai, the ferry is the quickest and most pleasant option.

  • Catamaran from the Gateway of India to Mandwa jetty: around 45–60 minutes across the water. Several operators run frequent daily departures, typically from early morning to early evening.
  • M2M RoRo ferry (from Bhaucha Dhakka / Ferry Wharf): roughly 60–90 minutes, and it carries vehicles — so you can drive your own car onto the ferry and off at the other side.
  • From Mandwa to Kihim/Alibaug: a short road hop of about 20–30 minutes; shuttle buses and taxis connect the jetty to town.

Tip: if you're bringing a car for the weekend, the RoRo ferry saves you the long road loop. If you're travelling light, the passenger catamaran is quick and scenic.

By road via the Atal Setu (MTHL)

The Atal Setu — the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link — has transformed the road journey. Heading out from Sewri in South Mumbai, you cross the sea link to the mainland and continue via the Chirle interchange onto NH-66 towards Alibaug.

  • Typical drive time: around 2 to 2.5 hours from Mumbai, depending on where you start and traffic.
  • Why it's better: the link bypasses the older, congested route and saves close to an hour compared with the traditional crawl through Vashi and Panvel.

Coming soon: the Revas–Karanja bridge

A new sea bridge across Dharamtar Creek — the Revas–Karanja bridge — is under construction as part of the coastal highway. Once complete, it's expected to cut the South Mumbai–Alibaug drive to roughly 75 minutes, shortening the distance further still. It isn't open yet, but it's a strong signal of where connectivity here is heading.

From Pune

Alibaug is an easy weekend drive from Pune — roughly 140 km, generally via NH-48 towards Panvel and then NH-66 down to Alibaug. Depending on the exact route and traffic, plan for around 3 to 4 hours.
